CAREER GUIDANCE BLOGS
If I were comparing nephrology jobs to the housing market, I would say it’s a buyer’s market. There are more jobs available then nephrologists looking. Sticking with the housing analogy, the you need to consider the timing of your search, the location you want to work/live, and whether the job aligns with your personal and professional goals. Once you know what you are looking for, you can start your search to find your dream job.
I put together some helpful tips to get you started on your journey.
When to start – start at least one year in advance of your anticipated start date. In my experience, about 50% of nephrology fellows will secure a position by or before the end of December. Another 30% will finalize their decisions in January or February, with the remaining 20% deciding in March or later.
Most employers start looking for their new associate a year in advance of needing them and factor in time for interviewing, contract negotiations and credentialing. On average it can take an employer 12-18 months just to find a new associate.
What to consider –
- What career path fits your needs?
- Private Practice
- Academics
- Hospital or Integrated Health System
- Pharma/Industry
- Where do you want to live?
- Do you have a specific location?
- Big city, mid-size, or rural area?
- Partnership or Employment?
- Access to medical directorships?
- Access to investment opportunities?
- How much do you want to earn?
- What hours do you want to work?
- How much call are you willing to take?
- Do your choices/interests align with your spouse/family?
Where to look – there are variety of websites you can look at for job postings but do not forget about networking. Networking is a great tool and available within your program and with NephMD. If I don’t have the right opportunity for you, I might know someone that does.
